This exhibition aims to provide a complete picture of ceramic coffins in Nara City by presenting the city's collection of ceramic coffin materials. The exhibition focuses on ceramic coffins as archaeological materials, showing how they were made and how they evolved over time, as well as the images of the people buried in them through the burial accessories excavated from the side-hole graves.
The red-burned tortoiseshell coffin is the second most common type of coffin excavated in the Kinki region after the Kibi region, and its distribution is particularly concentrated in the northwestern part of the Yamato Basin in the Nara City area. Excavations conducted by the Nara City Board of Education over the past 40 years have yielded a number of results, including the recent excavation of a horizontal grave in which a tortoiseshell-shaped ceramic coffin was excavated.
In this exhibition, the ceramic coffin materials owned by Nara City will be exhibited with the aim of providing visitors with a full view of the ceramic coffins in Nara City. The exhibition focuses on ceramic coffins as archaeological materials, showing how they were made and how they evolved over time, as well as the images of the people buried in them through the burial accessories excavated from the side-hole graves.
